Recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s?
You’re probably relieved, or quite confused, or a bit of both - just as most of us were at the same stage.
Some people are relieved because they wanted a diagnosis for a while. Others are confused as they don’t know quite where their Parkinson’s arose.
The important things we want to tell you are that you can live well with Parkinson’s and you are not alone.
So… what now?
A diagnosis of Parkinson’s is a major event in your life. It might be a total surprise, a relief after months of uncertainty, or a confirmation of suspicions. Whatever the background, it gives you much to consider and, in most cases, concern over what the future may hold.
You are not alone. You may want some time to process the news, but it is important to remember that help, support and information are readily available for you.
Support, activities, exercise and fun
We have meetings each month, and an active Working Age Group for people with Parkinson’s who are still working or have younger family.
We offer exercise classes designed for people with Parkinson’s, and mindfulness sessions. We have visits, a branch holiday, lunches together and other events: the next few months’ activities are on our website at this link. We provide grants for respite for carers. We support each other.
First Steps: your future with Parkinson’s
We know that following this diagnosis you may be looking for some guidance. By taking part in the First Steps programme offered by Parkinson’s UK you can meet others new to Parkinson’s, and find out about this rather complex condition we share. First Steps is available as face-to-face sessions in Oxfordshire, and online nationwide. The workshop sessions are led by facilitators who themselves have Parkinson’s, and they are free to attend.
